Not google ads
I *hate* sites with the infamous google ad as google has a cookie that expires in 40 years (no joke) and the ads actually send this information back to google when you just *view* the ads, some times...invasive, i know.
That said, I think what you should have are "sponsors" *text* ads, specifically for people/corporations who donate something to the operation of the site, or donate a reasonable amount.
If pay-per-click ads are required, please consider Overture over Google.

Thanks for your comments. I'm unsure about what ads to place on the site, but I thought of Google's AdSense. I also checked out Overture, but I couldn't find where to sign up at their site (does anyone know?).
