Stop the Draft Before the Draft Stops You!
Submitted by HopeSeekr of xMule on Tue, 2005-03-01 17:38.On March 31, 2005, Bush has ordered the Selective Services to be fully staffed + operational, and capable of instituting a full-scale draft of all American dwellers -- both citizen and non-citizen, both black and white, male and female, young and older.
Every one, especially 'skilled' males aged 17 to 40 (yes Four-tee) are eligible. And this time there are vanishingly few deferments. In this Age of Pre-Emptive Warfare, we can't have enough canonfodder. You kill a desert *#$*$ today or be declared a terrorist tomorrow, ya hear boy?!
Serving IE users other content
Submitted by praseodymium on Tue, 2005-03-01 15:22.Say you want to serve Internet Explorer users something different than users using another browser, such as a "Get Firefox" banner, or just do not want IE users to view your site because you know IE will screw it up anyway. You could then use user agent detection, either clientside (e.g. JavaScript) or serverside (e.g. PHP). But then some Opera user or someone using the Firefox UA Switcher Extension comes to your site - and will get the IE content, will think "Huh! I don't use IE. Weird site." and he'll close your site.
Gmail tricks
Submitted by praseodymium on Sat, 2005-02-26 12:32.For those who didn't know, there's something called plussing in Gmail. It works simple: you put a + and some text after your username (so e.g. example@gmail.com can become example+something@gmail.com). All emails sent to example+something@gmail.com will also be sent to you: handy when filtering your email.
And there's more: if you have an emailaddress which has a dot in the username, you can also remove the dot and the email will also be sent to you!
The new site!
Submitted by praseodymium on Fri, 2005-02-25 15:20.The new site has now gone live. There are still some small things to do though, such as getting the stats system integrated with Drupal and get the domain use DNS instead of having a redirect to the ugly URL.
This should all be done in the coming week, but until then, continue to spread the fox by folding!
Folding@Home and xMule :o
Submitted by HopeSeekr of xMule on Thu, 2005-02-24 23:34.What if a program used by tens of thousands could bundle not spyware but helpware. Imagine thousands of instance additions to the FireFox Folding@Home Team and you'll see the beauty of this, as well as a perfectly-GPLish form of payment to the voluntary developers of such appreciated apps.
